SAINT JOHN ENERGY OVERVIEW
Saint John Energy, officially known as The Power Commission of the City of Saint John, was established in 1922 to distribute electricity to the citizens of Saint John, New Brunswick. Today, we serve over 36,000 customers as a local distribution company (LDC) and are recognized nationally for our leadership in innovation and our commitment to the transition to Net Zero.
We are passionate about delivering value to our stakeholders. As Saint John’s premier provider of energy and related services, our customers are at the heart of everything we do. For over a century, we’ve powered the homes, businesses, and industries of our community with a focus on reliability, affordability, and excellent service.
Our sustainability commitment is guided by ISO 26000 and supported by our designation as a Sustainable Electricity Company™ by the Canadian Electricity Association. Our progress is demonstrated through projects like the Burchill Wind Project, Saint John’s first utility-scale wind farm. Commissioned in 2023, it generates up to 15% of the city’s electricity and offsets more than 43,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Building on this success, we are now developing the Menahqwesk Kisuhs Energy Hub in partnership with Universal Kraft Canada and Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) - a 10 MW solar farm that will power 1,200 homes and further reduce carbon emissions by over 10,000 tonnes annually.
These initiatives are part of our Zero30 strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions and deliver cleaner, more sustainable energy to our community.
Our Mission: Our customer-focused team employs creativity and innovation to deliver safe, reliable and affordable energy solutions.
Our Vision: To be a national utility leader in the energy transition to Net Zero.
Our Purpose: To power a sustainable future for the communities we serve.

Description: |
Project Description:Saint John Energy is a local distribution utility located in Saint John, New Brunswick. Today, Saint John Energy’s main streams of revenue are sales of electricity, a domestic water heater rental program and a mini-split heat pump rental program. The city of Saint John is one of the oldest cities in Canada. As such, many buildings use oil fired boilers to heat water in a hydronic loop for heating the building. To replace the established infrastructure is difficult and expensive. Rather, using air to water heat pumps can provide hot water for the hydronic loop at a fraction of the cost. Saint John Energy is looking to learn more about the products offered which can serve as a solution to this problem. Saint John Energy is further interested in how these products can apply to or enhance the current water heater and mini-split rental programs. The units need to be CSA approved. SJE is interested in the Global Warming Potential of the refrigerant used by the system.
Environmental and Sustainability Message: SJE has obtained the CEA Sustainable Electricity Company™ Brand and have identified core sustainability issues that are important to us and our stakeholders as per ISO 26000 guidance. We encourage our suppliers to review or adopt similar sustainable practices. SJE is committed to conducting a viable business in a manner which is respectful and protective of the Environment and in full compliance with legal requirements. That is why SJE maintains an Environmental Management System that is consistent with the ISO 14001:2015 international standard. An Environmental Management System allows a company to better manage environmental aspects of its business and improve performance. It is important to SJE that providers of goods and services and contractors understand this commitment as they conduct business with SJE, and that they help SJE to identify opportunities to enhance environmental initiatives through the use of appropriate products or services. It is also important that external contractors who work with our company understand our environmental practices and risks. While it is not the expectation of SJE that providers will have acquired ISO 14001 equivalency with their own environmental management systems, all contractors must operate in alignment with SJE’s Environmental Policy.
